Want to start losing weight? Want to just stay healthy? Here are the two inexpensive things you need to buy and get started.
I recently recorded a podcast episode with my friends at What the HAT?! and they asked me an interesting question.
What is the best thing you own under $100 that you are proud of?
My answer was instant, in fact, I told them I’ll give you two things and they only cost under $20 each! Sounds like a sweet deal, right? These two items were instrumental in my weight loss journey. Come on dude, tell us already!
Here you go:
- Body Weighing Scale
- Food Weighing Scale
Two things you must have if you’re trying to lose weight:
1. Weighing scale for your body
2. Weighing scale for your food#weightloss #Health #FitnessMotivation— prei-ruhk (@shethprerak) March 11, 2020
Complete game-changers. I’ll explain.
Body Weighing Scale
I refrain from giving weight loss advice without knowing a person and unless they ask. That is because every weight loss journey is extremely personal. To make it sustainable and long-lasting, you must follow your own pace. Listen to your body. Remember, quick diets are a fad, they will never make you lose weight in the long term. Do not fall for these traps. Treat your weight loss journey like a marathon and not a sprint. You will not see visible changes in your body for a few days, weeks, or even months together sometimes. But the weighing scale won’t lie.
Like everything else, don’t overdo it. Weigh yourself once every week. Preferably at the same time of the day and wearing the same clothes (or no clothes). I always measure my weight on Friday mornings, after poop-time with no clothes (TMI!). The timing is important because depending on what you drink and eat through the day, your weight can fluctuate due to water retention in your body. For example, every gram of carb you consume holds up to 3 grams of water. A fasted state thus offers no bias. I am not promoting any products here, but you can go with any best selling scales from Amazon or any other marketplace. If you are looking to spend more, there are great options available for scales that also measure fat %, water %, etc. You may not need these numbers early on in your journey, but they will be helpful in the long run.
Food Weighing Scale
Some would say this is overkill, but I think having a food scale is a blessing. I have always had problems dealing with portion control. This is particularly because I used to eat really fast but also because by the time my brain sent me the ‘I am full’ sensation, I would be past my required portion size. Classic mindless eating. With the food scale now, I do not have to think about the ‘I am full’ sensation, but it is more of a ‘this is what I am supposed to eat’. We associate pleasure with food, which is not wrong but shouldn’t be the primary reason behind eating. Food is fuel for your body before pleasure for the mind.
Calculating macros, calories, etc. become so much easier with the food scale. It takes some adjustment, but it fits seamlessly into your life. I don’t even remember how I used to eat before I had the food scale. For getting the right food scale, follow the same tips as above. You want to go for a tried and tested product. I carry my food scale with me even when I am traveling. If you plan to do so, make sure you go for a compact option. Once you have the scale, you can use MyFitnessPal or HealthifyMe to get started with tracking your macros.
That’s it. Super easy. Best value for your investment to get closer to your goals. Worst case scenario, use the body scale to weigh your luggage when you take a flight after this pandemic or use the food scale to split your chocolate with your sibling, haha. I hope it doesn’t come to that 🙂 Btw, here is the body scale and food scale I bought off Amazon last year.
